Frequently Asked Questions: Resume Fonts

How do I choose my font style(s)?

Trust your instinct. Scroll through the examples above a second time, and try applying each font to your resume text. Which do you find most appealing? Often, the font(s) you’re naturally drawn to will best reflect your work style and personality.

If you’re struggling to choose among several fonts, also take into account your target job and industry. Are you interested in a work setting that’s more traditional or modern? This preference can help you choose your font, as some styles come off more formal than others:

Traditional fonts

  • Arial Narrow
  • Cambria
  • Franklin Gothic Book
  • Georgia

Modern fonts

  • Aptos
  • Calibri
  • Candara
  • Corbel
  • Tahoma
  • Verdana
How many font styles should I use on my resume?

No more than two. When you use three or more fonts, they can make the format look “busy” and end up distracting from your content.

What size font(s) should I use?

About 17 points for your name, 14 points for section headings, and 11 points for all other resume text. These sizes help give your information a clear hierarchy. (Note: Verdana runs a little larger than other fonts, so if you use this style, reduce the above numbers by a point or two.)
