Set a Clear Focus
To show professionalism on a resume, focus on your relevant skillset and qualifications for your target job as much as possible. You can achieve that focus by taking the following approach to each main section:
- Profile – Name three to five key reasons you can excel in your target job.
- Key skills – List up to 10 critical ways you can apply yourself and excel in your target job.
- Professional experience – Give examples showing you can excel in your target job.
- Education and certifications – Cite your knowledge base and credentials that show you can excel in your target job.
On a professional resume, the experience section is usually most extensive. To make yours both detailed and skills-focused, follow these two steps:
Step 1. Outline your recent work history by listing each job title, employer, location, and start and end date. Take this outline back as many years as your target job calls for in applicants. For example, if a job posting calls for eight to 10 years, take your outline back to around 2016. (Consider going back further if that helps you fully cover your relevant work experience without risking age discrimination.)
Step 2. Limit each job description to duties and achievements that speak in some way to your target role. As mentioned above, the point here is to give examples that help employers see your impact. Flesh out each description only to the extent it matters to your job search. Keep a short description of any less relevant jobs, even ones you held recently and/or for a long time.
This strategy makes your resume more persuasive and likely to produce an interview. But also view it as a courtesy to busy hiring managers, who can’t waste time reading about an applicant’s work experiences that fall outside their staffing needs.
Leave Out Extraneous Details
Focus your resume further by omitting unnecessary background information, such as your:
- Hobbies or interests (unless they help you emphasize a relevant soft skill).
- Marital status or other personal information.
- Previous wages, salaries, or other conditions of employment (unless you’re applying for some federal jobs).
- Reasons for leaving each job – or more broadly, anything that indicates your attitude about an employer.
By omitting details like these, you keep your resume formal enough to make a strong impression on employers.
Opt for a Simple Format
You’ll also demonstrate professionalism using a simple, easy-to-read format and style. Avoid design flourishes or elements such as:
- Elaborate section borders.
- Ornate font styles (use popular resume fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Cambria).
- Three or more font styles or colors.
- Unnecessary pictures, symbols, or illustrations.
Features like these may look nice, but they usually just distract a hiring manager from your skills and career details. View resume design like a picture frame: It should display and support the content it contains, not upstage or distract from it.
